What is coaching? Being of some help. It’s one person helping another person. A new client arrives. You get ready to be of help. This sounds so simple! But what does someone in need of help actually need? Well, if the problem...

In this new column, we’ll look at everything from what goes on in the coaching session, including the nuts-and-bolts of starting sessions and ending sessions, to practical advice about building and maintaining your coaching business. We’ll deal with everything coaching!
Let me introduce myself. I live and work in the East Bay of San Francisco, in a small city called Walnut Creek. I’ve been working with clients, first as a family therapist and then as a coach, for coming up on forty years. Over the last few years, I’ve been privileged to create three coaching certificate programs in collaboration with Noble Manhattan Coaching, a creativity coach program, an existential wellness coach program, and a relationship coach program.
Over my many years of writing—I wrote my first “book” when I was eight, about seventy years ago—I’ve authored more than sixty books, including books in the coaching lane. Among my books for coaches are The Coach’s Way, Coaching the Artist Within, and Secrets of a Creativity Coach. Among my other books are Choose Your Life Purposes, Redesign Your Mind, Fearless Creating, The Future of Mental Health, and The Van Gogh Blues.
I continue to work with clients and I maintain a full international practice. My clients reside in England, France, Thailand, Mexico, China—isn’t that one of the beauties of coaching? We can work remotely with clients all over the world! It is hard to express how special that is, to be able to share in the lives of people everywhere around the globe.
I do many other things as well, in addition to coaching and writing books 😊. I created the Ethics International Press Critical Psychology and Critical Psychiatry series, where we look at problems with the current “mental disorder” paradigm, and I continue to edit books in that series. I write the “Rethinking Mental Health” blog for Psychology Today and a weekly column for The Good Men Project. And, at the highest level of fun, I roll around with the grandkids, though rolling around at my age is becoming a bit problematic.
I think I have a pretty good idea about what’s on your mind, a knowledge gained in part from training coaches for the past twenty years. The same questions keep resurfacing and the same array of challenges confront us individually and our profession as a whole. I hope that I can be of some help in all this, addressing your concerns, airing issues, and sharing tactics and strategies.

A coaching session is about to begin. You’ve remembered to smile. What’s the first thing to say? Your plumber, accountant, lawyer, or doctor will likely provide...
